Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E for Your Office Upgrade? Here Is How We Decide

Clients often ask us to "just quote the newest access points," but Wi-Fi 6E is not automatically the right call for every environment. It depends on device density, client hardware, and how congested your existing 5GHz spectrum already is.

If you are in a dense open-plan office with 100+ concurrent devices and frequent slowdowns during peak hours, the extra 6GHz spectrum genuinely helps — it is uncongested airspace with no legacy devices competing for it.

If most of your fleet is still Wi-Fi 5 laptops and older smartphones, paying a premium for 6E hardware buys you very little today, since those devices cannot use the 6GHz band at all. In that case, well-planned Wi-Fi 6 with proper channel planning and AP placement usually solves the actual problem for less money.

Our recommendation on every Aruba or FortiAP deployment: we run a wireless site survey first, then size the access point count and standard to the real device mix and building materials — not the newest SKU on the price list.
